India, U.S. Diplomats Convene in Kuala Lumpur
(MENAFN) India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio convened on Monday in Kuala Lumpur, as disputes over Russian oil imports and trade tariffs continue to strain relations.
“The two discussed bilateral ties as well as regional and global issues,” Jaishankar said on X, the US social media platform.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.
Representing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who participated virtually in the summit, Jaishankar attended the 20th East Asia Summit in Malaysia’s capital, according to the External Affairs Ministry.
Trade talks between the US and India resumed last month, following friction over 50% tariffs on Indian goods imposed during the Trump administration. These tariffs were partly linked to India’s ongoing purchases of Russian oil amid the war in Ukraine.
Since 2022, India has significantly ramped up imports of discounted Russian crude, becoming one of Moscow’s top energy clients despite Western sanctions.
The US remains India’s largest trading partner, with total goods and services trade projected to reach $212.3 billion in 2024.
